ORRVILLE - Science classes at Keith High School will take place outside more often.

Project Community, a new pilot program designed to enhance learning through a hands-on approach, will take students outside.

Doug Phillips, who hosts “Discovering Alabama” on public television, showed off the program's equipment and instructional materials.

“This is going to make learning relevant,” Phillips told Stephanie Holmes' seventh grade science class. “There's so much you can learn, and it's to make sure we take good care of the land.”

Sherika Parker said she was excited about “all the new stuff.”

“I really like this because it's helping our school,” she said. “You learn more when you can explore.”

The materials that come with Project Community include DVDs, binoculars, a weather station, maps identifying wildlife and plants and outdoor teaching exercises for students.

The project is paid for by a $126,000 from the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts.
